NBEA Scholarship and Professional Development Opportunities

Below is information regarding teacher scholarships and first-time national conference attendee stipends for members of NBEA.  These are just two of the many benefits of membership to your national business association, NBEA.  Please note the two deadlinesYou must be a member of NBEA to be eligible.


NBEA Scholarship Program
Two, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to individuals pursuing continuing education or graduate study in business education.  The NBEA Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to outstanding individuals for the purpose of continuing their study and professional development in business education.  You can access the information and Scholarship Application online at: www.nbea.org/proffsch.htmlThe deadline for those applications is December 1.


Professional Development Partnership Program for NBEA Convention First-Time Attendees ($200 Stipend)
If you are a professional member of NBEA and have never attended the annual national convention, you are eligible for a professional development stipend.  The $200 stipends will be presented during the Awards Luncheon at the NBEA 2009 Annual Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday, April 10. Winners must register for the luncheon where they will receive the stipend from NBEA President, Sharon Fisher-Larson, on behalf of the regional or corporate sponsor.   You can access the information and Professional Development Stipend Application Form online at: www.nbea.org/proffsti.htmlThe deadline for applications is January 4.

VBEA Awards

The following awards and recognitions were presented at the 2009 VBEA Awards and Recognition Brunch: 

  • First-Time Attendee Stipends of $50 were presented by Judy Sams to:
         Kim Lyttle, Germanna Region
         Marlena Burrus, J. Sargeant Reynolds Region
         Amanda Massie, Longwood Region
         Jullian Lewis, New River Region
         Susan Fox, Northern Virginia Region
         Charisse Woodward, Shenandoah Region
         Lisa McAlister, Thomas Nelson Region
         Karla Stead, Tidewater Region
         Carol Guerin, VSU Region
         Betsy Waskey, Virginia Western Region
  • VBEA Professional Scholarships were announced by Judy Sams.  Winners were Mary Lewis from Centerville High School in Fairfax County and Dinah Robinson from James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg.
  • VBEA Great Ideas Awards of $50 were presented by Glenna Hensdill to winners who wrote lesson plans relating to this year's theme, "What is your Great Idea for Teaching Students 21st Century Skills in the Classroom?"  Winners were Karen Carrier, East Montgomery High School and Toinette Outland, Booker T. Washington High School.
  • Al Roane Middle School Teacher of the Year Award was presented by Malinda Hogan, VBEA Special Recognition Chair, to Tina Cook from Thornburg Middle School in Spotsylvania County.
  • The Walter L. Shell Teacher of the Year Award was presented by Malinda Hogan to Toinette Outland, Booker T. Washington High School.
  • Jorgensen Tucker Student Scholarship was presented to Kathryn Dolan from Old Dominion University.

VBEA Recognition

Judith P. Sams, Business and Information Technology Specialist for the Virginia Department of Education, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for Supervision and Administration on March 21, 2008 at the NBEA Awards Program in San Antonio, Texas.

SBEA Recognition
 
(Received at the SBEA Convention held at the Louisville Marriott Downtown in Louisville, KY, October 29 - November 1, 2008.) 

Shirley Cash, Business and Information Technology teacher at Osbourn High School in Manassas, was named the 2008 SBEA Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Linda Davis, associate professor in the Administrative Support Technology Department of Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke was recognized as the 2008 SBEA Postsecondary Teacher of the Year. 

Beth Downey, Business and Information Technology coordinator for Fairfax County Public Schools, received the 2008 Supervisor Distinguished Service Award.
